About this place
If you would like to sample different cuts of horse sashimi, being able to choose them individually is a welcome option. Batanya Kodenmacho serves assorted portions of 3 or 5 varieties, and its à la carte selection includes lean meat, koune, futaego, fillet and marbled cuts. Some visitors have noted that individual cuts can be ordered from 2 slices, making it easy to start with a small taste of something that catches your eye and move on to an assortment if you want to try more. Horse-meat yukhoe and tataki served with house-made ponzu and condiments offer other ways to enjoy it raw.
Beyond sashimi, there is a tasting selection of 5 kinds of horse-meat nigiri, as well as horse-meat tekka rolls made with lean meat. One diner looking back on an evening set course recalled enjoying a little of several dishes, including horse sashimi, simmered chicken offal, Hakata Jidori chicken skewers, and horse-meat nigiri and rolls, and particularly liking the sashimi. The menu also features chicken offal simmered in a special soup based on Kyoto sakura miso. With skewers and snacks to go alongside a drink, it makes a good option for an evening meal.
At lunchtime, choices for a more substantial meal include beef tongue set meals and horse-meat yukhoe rice bowls. A diner who tried the beef tongue set praised the meat for being thick yet tender, and noted that white rice or brown rice was available. Another diner who ordered the daily pork soup set recalled a spread of pork soup and rice with fried horse mackerel, simmered hijiki seaweed, grated yam and green laver. The experience differs depending on whether you come for a lunch set or the horse-meat dishes served in the evening.
